bulletGRAMMAR:   The focus will be on sentence combining using phrases and clauses.  Also included will be eliminating run-ons and fragments as well a using commas and pronouns correctly.  Grammar is studied to ensure good sentence structure in writing.

 

bulletVOCABULARY: Each week students will receive vocabulary words to learn.  One vocabulary test will be administered each nine weeks.  These words are ones that frequently are used on the SAT's

 

bulletWRITING:  The major writing focus involves writing compositions for college entrance essays.  Students will also be required to write a research paper on two possible future career choices.  Essay tests, where students focus and elaborate on questions, are also used so that students learn to give specific details and examples to support their reasoning.  Creative writing and responses to literature are also included.  In addition, a book report is required for each semester.

 

bulletLITERATURE:  American Literature is read throughout the year.  Genres include nonfiction, poetry, short story, drama, and novel.  THE CRUCIBLE, written by Arthur Miller, which centers around the Salem Witch Trials, is the play studied.  The novel is Mark Twain's THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN.
