GRAMMAR:   The focus will be on sentence combining using phrases and clauses.  Also included will be eliminating run-ons and fragments as well a using commas and pronouns correctly.  Grammar is studied to ensure good sentence structure in writing.

 

VOCABULARY: Vocabulary words are given in groups of ten.  These words are reviewed in class, and there will be a test on them every two weeks.  The vocabulary words used are ones that are frequently found on the SAT's.

 

WRITING:  The majority of the writing students will do will be personal experience in nature.  However, students will be required to write a career research paper which will focus on two possible choices for their future.  Creative writing and responses to literature are also included.

 

LITERATURE:  American Literature encompasses all of the reading.  Students will read nonfiction, poetry, short stories, and the drama, THE CRUCIBLE, which centers around the Salem Witch Trials.
